As biotechnology includes knowledge of different areas of science, such as plant, cellular and molecular physiology; immunology; and biochemistry, we can consider three conceptual stages, related to the advances of knowledge in these sciences:
-Traditional biotechnology: it is the one that has no scientific basis. It was implemented in Mesopotamia with wine in 5000-4000 BC; with the manufacture of beer by the Sumerians in 6000 BC, or the manufacture of bread in 4000-3000 BC thanks to the Egyptians.
-Classical biotechnology: it was developed between the 19th and 20th centuries when scientists began to understand the processes of traditional biotechnology. Involves, for example, the regeneration of plants from parts of themselves.
-Modern biotechnology: since 1970, where the technology of recombinant DNA was known, consisting of an artificial DNA molecule formed deliberately in vitro by the union of DNA sequences and that comes from two organisms of different species that are not normally found together.
