I would go with letter c.  Even though he was a slave, Douglas was a person with a thirst for knowledge as well as freedom.  He also went through many hardships in his life which probably made him want to expect to the North.  He proved that a man should not be measured by his color or his status but his willingness to better his situation and Douglas strove hard to achieve that.
