Fortinbras is presented in Hamlet as a foil. He is a character introduced in order to highlight Hamlet's deficiencies by contrasting them to his own qualities. Fortinbras has a story which is similar to Hamlet's. His father, former King of Norway, made a bet with Hamlet's father, and lost some territory and his life in the process. Now, the young prince wants to avenge his father's death and reclaim the territory.
However, unlike Hamlet, Fortinbras is an extremely determined character. He has gathered an army in order to help him with his task. Hamlet, however, is indecisive, and struggles to take any action that will bring him closer to his goal of revenge.
