I would say that most of the immigrants to the US in the 1800's and perhaps early 1900's moved west to take up homesteading on free land as the American government had a very wise policy of granting free land to those hardy pioneers who were willing to work it so in that way they were able to settle the mid-West and West and that explains the long covered wagon trains heading west to begin settlements at different places on the Great Plains.
