Can somebody please paraphrase this for me?

Columbus swims ashore after his ship is sunk in a battle with pirates off Portugal. He joins his brother Bartholomew, a cartographer, in Lisbon.

Columbus joins his brother in Lisbon, after his ship had sunk in the battle with pirates off Portugal, he had to swim ashore in order to survive.
