viruses are dead, or nonliving because they cannot be classified as a living organism, however, viruses can evolve or change very quickly, so quickly that doctors have no idea how many viruses there are in the world. in the case of Chicken Pox, the virus causes your skin to develop itchy spots all over your body. While your body will fight the virus, there is no way to kill it, the virus will instead evolve and stay dormant in the body. When triggered by some kind of stimuli, the virus will become active again in the form of shingles, a burning rash instead of itchy spots. 

Vaccines made to prevent these types of diseases are made from the weakened form of the virus (called live virus)
