In the late 1800's, the United States began to assert itself politically and militarily beyond North America. For example, the United States took over the independent kingdom of Hawaii and fought a war against Spain the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean.

Identify two reasons the United States participated in expansionist policies such as these.

The USA expansionism was informed by the need to secure these strategic areas for commerce reasons. In addition, it was informed by the commitment by the USA to see the end to imperialism in North America.  This was particularly informed by the manifest destiny doctrine.
