The theory being described above is the chromosome theory. It is a theory of inheritance states that genes are located on chromosomes which undergo segregation and independent assortment. It is actually a fundamental unifying theory in genetics and inheritance which identifies chromosomes as the carriers of genetic material. The theory was developed by Boveri-sutton, who deduced that chromosomes are the basis of heredity, and that the reduction of chromosomes in meiosis is directly related to Mendel's laws of inheritance.
