9. Southern--Lincoln was a free-soiler who believed slavery should not extend any further. Southerners saw Lincoln as a threat and did not want him taking office. 

10. Voluntary--the Southern states believed they were in an agreement with the other states when agreeing to the Constitution. Being they believed in states' rights, they believed they could leave the Union if the laws were no longer in their favor.
