The period was called the Reconstruction. President Lincoln had won the war and was
determine to bring the nations together again. To do that, they needed to
rebuild the South which was devastated during the Civil War. Unfortunately, Lincoln had no plan on how to
accomplish this and before he could take action, he was assassinated. When Andrew Johnson became president, he
became antagonistic to the South. Many
resented the entry of “carpetbaggers” or northern opportunists who exploited
the victims of the war. Though slavery
was abolished and blacks now had the right to vote, their struggles were far
from over. Many were harassed by white
marauders particularly the Ku Klux Kan
and it took another 100 years for blacks to be treated equally.
