Schemas refer to patterns or models on which we base our perceptions and understanding of the world. When we come across something unfamiliar, we will soon get acquainted with it and it will become familiar to us - it will become part of our schema. When we have enough schemas about something, we develop perceptual sets in order to try and assimilate new information into our already-existing knowledge.
