Amy Tan compares squid to bicycle tires to show that the squid has a grooved surface. The explanation for this answer is set out in the text, when Amy Tan says " ... their backs crisscrossed with knife ..." This part of the text makes explicit that the back of the squid, its surface was grooved, just like the tires of a bicycle.
