Conifers are cone bearing plants which produce seeds and hence are gymnosperms.

The waxy covering around the leaves produces a cuticle and it helps to prevent dehydration. Since, the conifers are evergreen it is important for them to conserve water and to survive throughout the year. So for this purpose the conifers have this waxy coating around the leaves.
