Stephen Douglas was an American politician, leader of the Democratic Party, and a candidate for President in 1860, when he lost the election race from Abraham Lincoln. Prior to the Civil War, he was an orator who advocated the cause of popular sovereignty in relation to the issue of slavery in the United States. Also, in popular sovereignty, he saw a solution for preserving and strengthening individual freedoms through the extension of local self-government rights.
