In the time of Julius Caesar, gladiatorial games were held on a regular basis for both celebration and hedonism. As time passed, the optics of the bloody gladiator combat games were less accepted. Constantine the Great made the spectacle illegal and closed all remaining constable stables and schools.

The change that occurred in the gladiatorial combat during Caesar's reign and Constantine reign was that it was abolished  by Constantine.

During the reign of Caesar, he used the gladiator games as way to get more popular.

Caesar also used this as a way of eulogizing his father who had being dead for a long time.

Constantine on the other hand banned the games during his reign. He was a Christian Emperor who despised the games.

According to him, the gladiator culture was uncivilized and threatened domestic peace.
