I think the purpose was to show the importance of being a parent and being able to spend time with your children. I think it was achieved and would not make any changes, because the purpose of the lesson wouldnt be the same and wouldnt show the same effect.

This kind of montage of musical numbers was known as a Ziegfeld-Follies-style production, a Broadway revue that had beautiful well-dressed women posing while a tenor sang a song. If I were to make any changes, provably would choose a song that allows more protagonism for Kathy, to make the purpose of the scene a lot more clear.
