The Bill of Rights is incredibly important today because it protects Americans against the government trampling the most essential natural rights, such as freedom of speech. It is the 14th Amendment that guarantees fair treatment for all citizens under the law, and yes, the Bill of Rights even protects criminals to some extent by making sure they don't undergo cruel or unusual punishment.
