Should the confederate military leaders be punished? Or should they be able to reassume leadership positions? (Civil war)

This was one of the most highly contested issues after the Civil War ended, but many people in including Lincoln thought that they should not be punished, since the nation should begin the "healing" process as quickly as possible.
