During the Cold War, what was the stated main objective of the United States in engaging in proxy wars against the Soviet Union?

The United States was just there to supply ammunition or anything that you need in a war. They did not actually fight unless that specific country was under the Eisenhower Doctrine and they were trying to get rid of communism.
