When Kristen Wiig first arrived in L.A. she was part of an improvisational and sketch comedy troupe called "The Groundlings". This name was taken from Act III, Scene II, of "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark", "....to split the ears of the groundlings, who for the most part are capable of nothing but inexplicable dumbshows and noise.".

This troupe used format which was influenced by Viola Spolin and its improvisational theatre techniques were used by Del Close as well the other members of the Second City.
