Filtration
Filtration is commonly used to separate heterogeneous mixtures in liquid form. It separates solid particles from the liquid. The diagram shows how a filter holds back bigger solid particles while the liquid passes through.
Bigger solids can be separated from water by passing the mixture through a paper filter or a finely woven cloth. Ancient techniques for purifying water include filtering it through clean, fine sand or fine coal powder.
