Joseph W. Swan experimented in 1850’s and 60’s with carbon filaments, but his early experiments failed. Like other inventor Swan used a carbon rod with low electrical resistance in a lamp. This conductors bringing electricity were acceptable for an experiment but not for a commercial electrical system.
Edison realized that a thin “filament” with high resistance was necessary, like copper and it worked!
