I believe the correct answer is Gothic and slightly scary.
The ordinary word is normal, and something the narrator is used to. However, once he enters the House, it seems as if he entered another dimension because of how different the House is when compared to the rest of the world. It is creepy and old, and hides a lot of secrets.
