A motorboat, which has a speed of 5.0 meters
per second in still water, is headed east as it
crosses a river flowing south at 3.3 meters per
second. What is the magnitude of the boat’s
resultant velocity with respect to the starting
point?
(1) 3.3 m/s (3) 6.0 m/s
(2) 5.0 m/s (4) 8.3 m/s

(3) 6.0 m/s
Using Pythagora's Theorem with the magnitudes of the two speeds you get:
[tex]resultant= \sqrt{5^{2}+3.3^{2}} =5.99=6 m/s[/tex]
