The strand of truth is the first stage in the forgiveness process, where an individual is able to acknowledge, honor, and communicate about what happened and its effects.  In Jim's case, he has realized the effects of his fight for the custody of his children. He also acknowledged that his fight is more hurting to Susan than to their children.
