Tundras are very cold and harsh. They have no trees and little vegetation, although there may be wildflowers in the summer, due to indirect sunlight. There is barely sufficient rainfall and the climate is often windy. Animals include caribou, birds, polar bears, wolves and arctic foxes (to name a few).
The absence of trees is a distinguishing aspect of the tundra. It prevents them from taking root, and those that do succeed have shallow root systems that aren't strong enough to endure heavy winds.
The vegetation and animals in extreme climate
The musk ox, Arctic hare, polar bear, Arctic fox, caribou, and snowy owl are among the animals that live in the tundra. During the winter, many arctic creatures, such as the caribou and the semipalmated plover, travel to warmer climates.
Extremely cold environment, little biotic diversity, basic vegetation structure, drainage limitations, short growth and reproduction seasons, energy and nutrients in the form of dead organic matter, massive population fluctuations.
Finally, low precipitation indicates that there is insufficient water to sustain trees.
