Sara needs to take a taxi to get to the movies. The taxi charges $4.00 for the first mile and then $2.75 for each mile after that. If the total charge is $20.50, then how far was Sara's taxi ride to the movie?

So the first step is to subtract 4.00 from 20.50.  Once we do that, we get 16.50. The next step is to divide 16.50 by 2.75, to find out how many miles (after the 1st mile) Sarah's ride was.  16.50/2.75 = 6.  So 6 + 1 = 7.  The total mileage length to get to the movies was 7 miles.
