Thomas Paine wrote these immortal words
"These are the times that try men's souls". 

I guess George Washington was trying to get his troops to understand that no matter what was to happen during that great fight, that they were to have faith and courage. To look the enemy in the face and show bravery. Not just for them, but for their country.
