In 1836 Alabama became the first state to declare Christmas a legal holiday. On January 28th, 1846 Montgomery was selected as the capital of Alabama. Alabama workers built the first rocket to put humans on the moon. Alabama introduced the Mardi Gras to the western world. Montgomery was the capitol and birth place of the Confederate States of America. The Confederate flag was designed and first flown in Alabama in 1861. On January 11, 1861 Alabama becomes the fourth state to secede from the Union.The world's first Electric Trolley System was introduced in Montgomery in 1886. The Alabama State Flag was authorized by the Alabama legislature of February 16, 1895. The current capital is Montgomery and the population as of 2014 is 4.849 million. There are 67 counties in Alabama. The most populous county is Jefferson County with 658,466 people. The least populous county is Greene County with 9,045 people. Alabama is the 23rd most populous state and the 28th largest by land area.There are 169 cities and 291 towns.
