1 Determine the procedure whether it is a test or service to be encoded
2 Identify the terms in the procedure
3 Using the Alphabetic index, locate your terms
4 Identify the subterms of your terms
5 Take note of the code number of your terms and subterms
6 Use the tabular list to verify the code
7 Refer to the coding conventions and notes
8 Look for modifiers where necessary
9 Repeat the steps for adding more codes
