John Ross was the chief of the Cherokee Nation during the 19th century. He was elected chief in October 1828 and held this position until his death in 1866, serving longer in this position than any other person. Ross was of mixed Scottish and Cherokee ancestry, and was educated bilingually and biculturally, which allowed him to better perform his role during these difficult years.
