Andrew Jackson, May 28,1830, authorizing the president to grant unsettled lands west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian lands within existing state borders. A few tribes went peacefully, but many resisted the relocation policy.
President Andrew Jackson singed into law the Indian Removal Act on May 28, 1830 after the House of Representative passed the act 101 to 98. the act was set up to "safely remove" the tribes of the south to allow for expansion. Only two of the five tribes agreed to move west of the Mississippi River to government land.
