Because they spent so much time being property of people who owned something, they wanted to enjoy how it felt being on the other side and having something too own for them self.
Black petitioners believed that owning land was essential to the enjoyment of freedom. This belief was justified based in the fact that a lack of land during this time period often meant that the person could not achieve full independence. People who were free but lacked land had to continue to work for landowners, and in this way, the enjoyment of their freedom was severely limited.
