Three years after the 19th amendment was enacted, in 1923, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which ensures complete equality for women, was first put forth in Congress.
It aims to resolve the inequities between men and women in the law that pertain to divorce, property, employment, and other sectors.
Because of a conservative backlash against feminism in the middle of the 1970s, the Equal Rights Amendment ultimately failed to be approved by the required 38, or three-fourths, of the states, by the deadline set by Congress. Congressman Daniel R. Anthony, Susan B. Anthony's nephew, first presented the Equal Rights Amendment in Congress. It was created by pioneering advocate for women's rights Alice Paul as a plan to end prejudice against women. Alice Paul, a prominent member of the women's suffrage movement and a lawyer with three law degrees, drafted the Equal Rights Amendment in 1923.
