The building and tearing apart of the supercontinent Pangaea or Pangea hundreds of millions of years ago created reverse and tensional faulting that has made the eastern United States susceptible to earthquakes today.
A supercontinent is created when the vast majority of the Earth's continental cratons are combined to form a single, enormous landmass. Pangea, often called Pangaea, was a supercontinent that included nearly all of the landmasses on Earth in early geologic time.
By the Early Permian Epoch, Panthalassa, a world ocean that encircled Pangea, had been fully constructed (some 299 million to about 273 million years ago). A three-pronged fracture between Africa, South America, and North America marked the beginning of Pangea's disintegration. A volcanic rift zone was formed when magma welled up through the crustal weakness and rifting started.
