An underlying cause for the high number of cavities in poor children is the lack of awareness about the importance of oral hygiene and health.

Cavities in the teeth are the hole like structures generated due to the damage in the enamel layer of the teeth. This can happen due to food stuck in the teeth, too much consumption of sugar or carbonated drinks. These substances when come in contact with the bacteria can lead to the formation of acid that have the ability to destroy the enamel layer.

Oral hygiene is taking care of the entire mouth. This not just includes teeth but also the gums and tongue. Proper cleaning should be done twice a day daily. Dental floss, usage of mouthwash are the secondary requirements that lead to health oral cavity.
