Spinal cord injury is what should be suspected by the EMT while  assessing a patient who was ejected from his truck, the EMT notices that his chest collapses and his abdomen rises during inhalation.
The patient's abdomen is moving while his chest is not, patient is exhibiting diaphragmatic breathing. Similar to a frail chest, a fractured sternum would be expected when the chest collapses during inhalation and bulge during exhalation. A decreased abdominal movement is when bowel sounds may be auscultated over the lung fields.
