The vertebrate heart has evolved from a Two-chambered fish heart to a Three-chambered amphibian & reptilian heart to a Four-chambered mammalian heart by increasing the number of chambers.
The chambers of the heart increases as we move from Fish to Mammals.
Two chambered heart is the heart containing two chambers with one atria and one ventricle and is generally present in fishes like Scoliodon, Exocoetus, Pristis etc.
Three chambered heart is the heart containing three chambers with two atria and a single ventricle and is generally present in Amphibians and reptiles like Frog, Lizard, Snake with the exception of crocodiles.
Four chambered heart is the heart containing four chambers containing two artia and two ventricles and is generally present in Mammals like humans, dog, cat and reptile like Crocodiles.
The presence of four chambered heart makes the heart more efficient by not allowing the mixing of blood in the chambers and following the double circulation of blood.
