Certain retroviruses may contain oncogenes or onc genes from a different class. These genes allow for the rapid development of tumors in animals and the oncogenesis of cells in culture by retroviruses, commonly known as transforming viruses.
What are Retroviruses ?
- Because they change the direction in which genes normally copy themselves, retroviruses are called "retro" viruses. DNA is often converted into RNA by cells so that it can be translated into proteins. But when it comes to retroviruses, the process must reverse itself.
- Because they reproduce through a DNA intermediary, retroviruses must also carry the sequence for the promoter that will activate the expression of the genomic RNA. Retroviruses carry their genome as RNA. This sequence can be found close to the 3′ end of the RNA genome.
