Organic matter is most often found in A horizon and O horizon.

The O horizon is usually at the top of the soil structure and is composed mainly of organic matter. This organic matter is important for the growth of plants and other plants because it contains nutrients such as carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen and sulphur.

Soil erosion from horizons A and O will cause these layers to be removed which would result in exposing soils that are not rich in organic matter, making it difficult for plants to grow in this type of soil.

Looking at the soil profile, one can see layers of different soil particles, each of which is called the horizon of the earth.

Most soils have three main horizons -

surface horizon (A)
subterranean horizon (B)
