Based on a research study, interventions that incorporate principles of self-control and motivation can bring about successful change in exercise habits.

What do we mean by self-control?

Humans differ from other animals in the animal world in that they have the capacity for self-control, or the capacity to regulate one's impulses, emotions, and actions in order to attain long-term goals. The prefrontal cortex, which is significantly bigger in humans than in other mammals, is the brain region responsible for planning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

In contrast to reacting instantly to every urge as it emerges, humans are able to plan, weigh alternative actions, and hopefully avoid doing things they'll regret because of the prefrontal cortex's rich network of nerve connections.
