The nurse should assess for Tobramycin injection
Tobramycin can only be administered intravenously or by injection into a muscle for systemic usage because, like all aminoglycosides, it does not pass through the gastro-intestinal tract. Low systemic absorption is a problem for both nebulized formulations and eye drops and ointments (tobramycin alone, Tobrex, or coupled with dexamethasone, available as Tobradex). The injection formulation carries the Nebcin brand name. Cystic fibrosis patients should use the nebulized formulation (trade name Tobi) to treat Pseudomonas aeruginosa exacerbations of their chronic infection.
Bausch & Lomb Pharmaceuticals makes Tobrex eye drops, a sterile ophthalmic solution containing 0.3% tobramycin. As a preservative, benzalkonium chloride 0.01% is used.
