An idealist is unlikely also to be a materialist.

It's built up science and undermined religion. the identical process goes on today. within the interests of a tiny low minority. These ideas are being transformed by materialistic wondering about history as our ancestors' ideas were transformed by materialistic puzzling over nature. The consequence will little doubt be revolutionary, because it was within the past. But it's working very badly.

So we are likely to possess an uncomfortable time in the immediate future, whatever happens. And as I would like a rational society to return to our present troubles I'm not only a materialist myself, but I do what I can to form other materialists. I also think it's useful because it results in actions of which I approve.

Mankind is up against a really difficult situation. we've handled a good mass of problems in the past by scientific thinking — that's to mention, materialistic thinking. We attempt to solve our political problems by appealing to eternal values. But if we start thinking materialistically about these 'eternal values' we discover that they're social phenomena that have to inherit within the previous couple of thousand years.

So society became a good deal more complicated, and 'eternal values are a part of the apparatus by which it's been kept going. particularly, they're very useful to those that are in comfortable situations at {the present |at the moment |at this time| nowadays} and would love the present state of things, with some minor modifications, to be eternal.
