The development of antibodies called seroconversion is found in most people who are HIV positive, where marker antibodies are usually present 10 to 12 weeks after exposure.

Seroconversion is sometimes accompanied by a flu-like illness. Symptoms appear within a month after infection and may go away within three weeks. After getting HIV, most people encounter a short one- or two-week illness called a seroconversion illness up to 6 weeks after exposure to HIV.
