China is the country that sent over 250,000 troops to North Korea because the leadership believed that the Americans were scheming to expand democracy into East Asia. That was part of the Korean war. The Chinese wanted North Korea as a Communist buffer state to protect their northeastern provinces that made up Manchuria and they also felt threatened by the American fleet that lay off their coast.
Mao's (then Chinese leader) motivations for intervening in Korea were more complex. He saw China's responsibilities to the socialist camp (particularly to North Korea). He was angered that the US Seventh Fleet was sent to the Taiwan Strait. He was very concerned about the security of China's northeastern borders. Last but not least, he wanted to enhance the Sino-Soviet alliance, so as to consolidate the new regime of the CCP in China. Thus, China entered the Korean war.
