The fire that resulted in 146 deaths and shed light on the need for reform in the workplace was at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory.

The Triangle Factory was situated in Greenwich in Manhattan in New York City. It produced women's blouses. They were called 'shirtwaists.' It employed about five hundred workers, including women and girls.

On March 25, 1911, as the employers were finishing up their work, a fire flared up beneath a cutter's board. Both the owner of the factory and his children were present in the factory at that time, who had come to visit the factory.

All the doors and stairs were locked to prevent theft which was a common practice at that time. Thus, most of the workers could not escape from the building, which was on fire. Many employees tried to jump out of the windows and escape, but they fell and died on the street.

It led the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union to protest for better working conditions in the other factories.
