The sea floor have a striped pattern of magnetic anomalies that is symmetric with respect to the mid-ocean ridge because the polarity of Earth's magnetic field experiences reversals.
When lava gets erupted at the mid ocean axis, it cool and turns into hard rock. It cools and becomes permanently magnetized towards the Earth's magnetic direction. Scientist have discovered that Earth has reversed its polarity of direction hundreds of time during the past seven hundred million years.
These patterned strips provides the geophysicists the history of sea floor spreading. They read these patterns from the magnetic anomalies with the help of magnetometer.
