What are Amino Acids?

Amino acids are chemical molecules having side chains (R groups) unique to each amino acid as well as amino and carboxylic acid (CO2H) functional groups. Every amino acid contains the elements carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), and nitrogen (N), as well as sulfur (S) and selenium (Se), which are both found in the side chains of the less frequent amino acids cysteine and methionine.

As of 2020, more than 500 naturally occurring amino acids are understood to be the building blocks of monomers of peptides, including proteins. However, only 22 amino acids are found in the genetic code, 20 of which have unique designated codons, and two of which have unique coding mechanisms: selenocysteine, which is present in all eukaryotes, and pyrrolidine, which is present in some prokaryotes.
