When is it appropriate to remove contact lenses from your patient's eyes?
Any patient who is unconscious or sustains an optical injury must have their contact lenses taken off. When examining the eye with fluorescein stain, contact lenses shouldn't be worn. Even though the majority of patients are able to remove their own contact lenses, knowing how to do so is an important skill for any practitioner. Patients may arrive at the emergency room having trouble taking out their own contacts or with acute ophthalmological problems related to contact lens usage. In some cases, removing contact lenses is necessary for an examination. The possibility that patients with altered mental status—such as those who are comatose—may be using contact lenses should also be taken into account.
