Sennacherib initially paid Hezekiah in silver and gold in order to prevent him from assaulting Jerusalem.

Who is Sennacherib?

Sennacherib was the second ruler of Assyria's Sargonid Dynasty and ruled from 705 to 681 BCE (founded by his father Sargon II). Due to his prominence in Old Testament stories (II Monarchs, II Chronicles, and Isaiah), as well as during the 19th century CE, the English author Lord Byron's poem "The Destruction of Sennacherib," is one of the most well-known Assyrian kings. The second Assyrian king to destroy Babylon's temples and be killed for his desecration of the gods, he is also remembered for this (the first king being Tukulti-Ninurta I in c. 1225 BCE). Sennacherib moved the capital to Nineveh, which he lavishly renovated, abandoning his father's new city of Dur-Sharrukin.
